Description
(Allium x proliferum)
An attractive bulbing onion with small bulbils that form on top of slender green stems.
Flavours/Food Partners
Partners with basil, garlic, chives, coriander, lemon grass and most salad herbs. Adds flavour to most dishes from simple sandwiches to salads, soups and baked meat.
Health/Cooking/Medicinal
Use as you would normal onions and shallots. Bake or steam and serve whole or finely slice and use in salads and sandwiches. Great for pickling.
Landscaping/Planting
Tree Onions will grow in most garden beds provided there is a reasonable amount of sun. Respond well to summer watering and are tolerant of quite cold conditions. They will grow well in pots and are excellent for kids as they are easy to grow, harvest and use.
Cultivation/Fertiliser
Regular applications of Seasol and PowerFeed will give good results. Harvest when stems dry out. Do not allow to reshoot as it will weaken the bulbs. After harvesting, dry the bulbs in a cool dry place and store in similar conditions for up to 12 months.
