An attractive perennial with deep green leaves and a mushroom like flavour from the mountain forests of Papua New Guinea.
Flavours/Food Partners
A mushroom like flavour that goes well with all green salad vegetables, cooking tomatoes like San Marzano and Roma, basil, oregano and garlic. Stir fry with fresh snow peas, sweet capsicum, Welsh Onions and seafood like prawns and calamari.
Health/Cooking/Medicinal
Use the fresh young leaves with salads and in sandwiches. When using in stir fries add just prior to serving. The leaves are very high in Calcium (275mg/100gm leaves) and protein (37%). Also rich in chlorophyll. The strength of mushroom flavour varies amongst people. Some can hardly taste it others find it very strong.
Landscaping/Planting
Prefers moist but well drained soil in a semi shade position with morning sun. Goes dormant in winter in the cooler climates.
Cultivation/Fertiliser
Fertilise with Seasol and Powerfeed in spring, summer and autumn.
