Cos lettuce is a tasty, succulent lettuce with an elongated head and dark green, long, narrow, crisp leaves. The interior leaves are paler in colour and have a more delicate flavour. Cos lettuce is mostly comprised of water, so it is extremely low in kilojoules. Cos lettuce is thought to have originated in the eastern Mediterranean area and is believed to be the oldest cultivated lettuce.
Growing Tips
Lettuces are easily grown in any moist but well drained, humis rich soil in full sun or part shade. For tender succulent leaves, ensure soil remains moist.
Use
It is most often grown as a leaf vegetable. In many countries, it is typically eaten cold and raw, in salads, hamburgers, tacos, and many other dishes. In some places, including China, lettuce is typically eaten cooked and use of the stem is as important as use of the leaf. By varying the greens in your salads, you can enhance the nutritional content as well as vary the tastes and textures.
