(Capsicum annuum ‘Alma Paprika’)
Heat Rating out of 10: 0
A round pepper the size of a small apple with thick flesh and a sweet flavour. This is the source of the true Hungarian sweet paprika. Fruits turn from creamy white to orange then red when fully ripe.
Serve raw with salad vegetables, cooked with meat and vegetables. Partner with garlic, shallots, onions, tomatoes, oregano, marjoram, thyme and rosemary.
Capsicums are a versatile vegetable that are great raw in salads, sandwiches and with dips. Alternatively lightly fry in stir fries and Asian dishes or slow baked with meat and other vegetables in European style cooking. This variety is traditionally dried and ground to make paprika, a classic ingredient of goulash. Harvest when fruits turn red.
Plant in a protected spot out of fierce sunlight and wind in a well drained but moist soil. May need some support when it ages.
Regular applications of Seasol and Powerfeed will keep the plant looking good and producing lots of tasty chillies.
