Description
(Lycopersicon esculentum ‘Allan’s Early Red’)
Allan’s Early Red is a modern heirloom and will fruit at the start of the season producing masses of multi-celled rich red fruit for salads, sauces chutneys and drying! A determinate (bush) variety that will reward any home growers with the best crop possible.
Flavours/Food Partners
Fresh tomatoes are enhanced by herbs like parsley, chives and celery leaf but Allan’s Early Red performs at its best when sun dried then used for home made chutneys and sauces.
Health/Cooking/Medicinal
Like all tomatoes, Allan’s Early Red is high in the cancer fighting agent, Lycopene and Vitamin C. Serve in salads, sandwiches or as a side to a good steak. Health benefits can be enhanced by moderate cooking and the firm, dense, meaty texture makes it ideal for sauces and pastes. For a great chutney dry your tomatoes then collect an onion, cloves of garlic, ground coriander, olive oil and red wine vinegar. Cook the onion and garlic then add tomatoes, vinegar and spices and cook until thick. Cool and store in a dark pantry.
Landscaping/Planting:
Plant in an airy, sunny position in well drained soil or very large pots. 1.5m stake is optional.
Cultivation/Fertiliser
Like all tomatoes it must receive a deep soaking when almost dry and should not receive overhead watering. Feed regularly with Seasol and PowerFeed. A small amount of dolomite lime after planting will make stronger plants. Remove side shoots and develop two or three main leaders. Harvest when fruit is full colour.
