Cat Thyme

A tough, misty-blue flowered ground cover. The aroma gives cats a natural high – for the cat that ‘has been there, done that’.

Description

(Teucrium marum)

Hardy perennial with lanceolate grey-blue leaves with dainty two-lipped rose pink flowers. The whole plant has a strong aroma, a little camphor-like.

Growing Tips

Grow herb in well-drained soil. It is an ideal border plant and great for colour contrast in a rockery as it always makes a striking display with its very petite grey-blue foliage.

Use

Antiseptic and astringent properties have given the plant application as an infusion for external cuts and sores and skin conditions. Dried powdered leaves were used as snuff to clear the head. The dried leaves were also used to make stuffed cat toys. However, it is said that some cats dislike the smell. The leaves, brushed against or crushed, emit a strong smell which can set off sneezing, so this maybe the reason some cats avoid the plant.
