(Lycopersicon esculentum )
Grosse Lisse is an old Australian favourite that produces abundant fruit over a long period. It has medium to large, globe-shaped, deep red fruit with a great flavour. It is a climbing type so requires staking. It also grows very tall and it is best with some pruning of early side-shoots. Try to develop just 2 main leaders. If too many leaders are kept, fruit size will be reduced.
This is a classic old time favourite full of flavour and juice. It is a heavy fruiting variety.
Like all tomatoes must receive deep soaking when dry and should not receive overhead watering. Feed regularly with Seasol and Powerfeed. A small amount of dolomite lime after planting will make stronger plants. Plant in an airy, sunny position in well drained soil or very large pots. Requires a 1.5 to 1.8m stake.
Like all tomatoes, Grosse Lisse is high in the cancer fighting agent, Lycopene. This is enhanced by moderate cooking. Serve in salads, sandwiches or lightly fry with golden shallots, garlic chives and fresh Basil Pesto. Tomatoes are also high in Vitamin C and when blended with fresh spearmint make an excellent summer drink.
|Harvest||Remove side shoots and develop two or three main leaders. Harvest when fruit is full colour.|
