Description
(Lycopersicon sp.)
A late fruiting variety that is quite cold tolerant and can be planted late in the season. Medium sized red fruit that was bred in Victoria by Helgi Nirk at the Ag department. A cross between Grosse Lisse and L. peruvianum (from Peru).
Flavours/Food Partners
A good salad variety that is enhanced by herbs like parsley, chives and celery leaf. Can be canned and partners well with basil and oregano.
Health/Cooking/Medicinal
Like all tomatoes, Burnley Bounty is high in the cancer fighting agent, Lycopene. Serve in salads, sandwiches, with firm cheeses or lightly fry with golden shallots, garlic chives and fresh basil. Tomatoes are also high in Vitamin C and when blended with fresh mint make an excellent summer drink.
Landscaping/Planting
Plant in an airy, sunny position in well drained soil or very large pots. Requires a 1.5 to 1.8m stake.
Cultivation/Fertiliser
Like all tomatoes it must receive a deep soaking when almost dry and should not receive overhead watering. It is also sensitive to frost. Feed regularly with Seasol and Powerfeed. A small amount of dolomite lime after planting will make stronger plants. Remove side shoots and develop two or three main leaders. Harvest when fruit is full color.
