(Origanum syriacum)
An easy to grow hardy perennial with a spreading habit, attractive heart-shaped foliage and soft white flowers. Zaatar is the Middle Eastern name for this form of oregano but also the common name for a range of Arabic herbs.
Flavours/Food Partners
Zaatar has the classic oregano flavour but more so! It goes well with basil, rosemary, thyme, lavender, garlic and chervil. Enhances salad vegetables, soups, pasta dishes and fish. Also partners well with most root vegetables, eggplant and tomatoes.
Health/Cooking/Medicinal
An easy to use herb that enhances other herbs and is an essential part of Arabic and Israeli cooking. It has a warm aromatic flavour that partners well with all meats and most vegetables. Oregano Zaatar works very well with cooked and raw tomato, cheese and fresh bread along with bean dishes like hummus. Can be added early in the cooking or late for a more subtle flavour. Young leaves taste the best.
Landscaping/Planting
It is a dry tolerant herb that will suppress weeds and likes part sun to full sun and a well drained soil. Prune back in late summer to keep compact, tidy and growing well.
Cultivation/Fertiliser
Harvest often and give regular applications of Seasol and PowerFeed to keep the plant healthy and producing well.
