Description
(Valerianella locusta)
A fast growing semi-annual with tasty leaves that makes a great addition to summer salads and winter vegetables.
Flavours/Food Partners
Parsley, chives, celery leaf, nasturtium flowers and any salad greens. Use in salads to add colour and flavour. Works really well with egg in simple salads or diced capsicums and corn mixed with a range of salad grains like quinoa.
Health/Cooking/Medicinal
An easy to use and healthy addition to winter and summer dishes. Use with other colourful edible flowers like nasturtium, sage, calendula and violets or in classic Aussie salads like Egg Pasta Salad. Not a classic lettuce but far better nutritionally and much richer in flavour.
Landscaping/Planting
Plant in most garden beds as it will grow in part to full sun in a variety of different soil types. Summer moisture aids to good growth.
Cultivation/Fertiliser
Regular applications of Seasol and PowerFeed keep the plant healthy and producing well. Pick leaves as needed and remove any flower stems to encourage more leaf growth.
