Description

(Apium graveolens var. rapaceum)

Celery Leaf grows a head of long stocks topped with light green foliage.

Growing Tips

Keep celery well weeded, they take a long time to get going and weeds can make them take even longer. Celery needs continually moist soil. Water the soil, not the leaves. Water sitting on the leaves can invite fungus and diseases. Celery is susceptible to fungal leaf blight that turns the leaves yellow then defoliates the plant. Crop rotation is key to controlling this problem as well as disposing of the damaged leaves far from the garden. Never compost blighted leaves. If you have large ragged holes, check for slugs. Mound soil at the base of the plant as is grows to keep the stalks upright. You can also stake celery if needed.

Use

Celery is a good source of riboflavin, vitamin B6, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus and a very good source of dietary fibre vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, potassium and manganese. Interestingly, a serving of celery has 4% of your RDA of sodium. You can add celery leaves or stalks to any dish such as soups, stews, casserolse, and salads.

Herb Attributes

Harvest When the stalks are 15-20cm tall they are ready to pick with a sharp knife. This usually takes 90-100 days of growing time. You can get multiple harvests from the same plant. Pick the oldest stocks first to keep your plants producing.
