Description
(Brassica oleracea (Gemmifera Group))
A traditional leafy green vegetable that is loved by many but, due to poor cooking history, is not so popular with kids. They have tight green buds with a strong cabbage-like flavour.
Flavours/Food Partners
Brussels partner with all other root and leafy green vegetables, either baked, steamed or even fried. Flavour is best when slightly undercooked but still soft. Serve with butter and/or lemon juice.
Health/Cooking/Medicinal
For maximum health benefits, do not overcook. They make a great side dish tossed in the wok with some garlic, oregano and lemon juice. They are also excellent lightly steamed. Serve with your favourite vegetables and meat. Great as an accompaniment to baked lamb and baked chats with a dusting of salt and fresh rosemary.
Landscaping/Planting
Airy, open position with plenty of sun; avoid heavier frosts. Likes spring watering in a location with very good drainage. Will bolt to seed in summer.
Cultivation/Fertiliser
Requires regular applications of Seasol and PowerFeed. Deep soaking in spring. When plants are young then keep dry. Harvest at 3-6 months.
