(Pogostemon cablin)
There are many herbs in The Renaissance range. Some are essential to any good kitchen, others are a bit exotic and some are special plants that make up our Premium Collection. Patchouli is an exotic shrub from tropical Asia and has been used as strong fragrance for centuries. There are several species with P. cablin being the main one.
Flavours/Food Partners
Patchouli is predominantly used as the essential oil but the fragrant flowers are great for potpourri and the leaves can be used for herbal teas or light seasoning.
Health/Cooking/Medicinal
Patchouli oil has been used for years as a medicinal aid and as an insect repellent and in incense. It is possible produce oil at home (do internet search for methods) but is easiest if used as dried leaves and flowers. Once dried then place anywhere that benefits from the strong fragrance ie. replace mothballs.
Landscaping/Planting
This medium shrub is an attractive plant for warm climates. Can be grown in large pots on the verandah or even as an indoor plant and as a low hedge against a warm wall. Will grow in most soil types and prefers to be kept moist although will recover from short dry periods. Dappled shade or morning sun only.
Cultivation/Fertiliser
Pick leaves as needed and give regular applications of Seasol and Powerfeed to keep the plant healthy and producing well.
