Description
(Mentha x piperita ‘Julep’)
A sweet cultivar of this common garden herb with a strong spearmint flavour. This is a strong scented mint with the classic Mint Julep taste.
Flavours/Food Partners
Partners well with other mints, lime juice, scented geraniums and lime verbena for teas, cocktails and sweet dishes. Use in any drink or sauce that requires a spearmint flavour.
Health/Cooking/Medicinal
Mint Julep is the cocktail of the American South (especially during racing season) and its origins go back to the 18th century Kentucky. Muddle 4 sprigs of mint with 10ml sugar syrup and 20ml water. Fill glass with cracked ice then add 60ml of good Kentucky Bourbon and garnish with mint leaves.
Landscaping/Planting
Mints require open soil with summer moisture. Given these conditions they can run away so should be planted where this is desired or in large pots.
Cultivation/Fertiliser
Regular applications of Seasol and Power Feed will keep it looking its best. Cut back annually to keep under control.
